The standard was set for a fabulous evening’s entertainment with a glittering array of sporting superstars when fast bowling Aussie legend Jeff Thompson called us on his way to the ground to ask if would be ok for him to bring his “driver” into the function.

Thommo’s driver turned out to be none other than Mick Hartford ex Birmingham City, Chelsea and England striker (and Notts Forest & QPR manager)

Gladsone Small Warwickshire and England fast bowler chaired an interesting discussion with Chris Broad and Jeff Thompson about the forthcoming Ashes Series.

Thommo was pretty downbeat about his Countrymen’s task ahead, whilst Chris was hoping that son Stuart was in for a bumper summer.

Gladstone told Thommo that from his previous experiences he knew that the Aussies wouldn’t just roll over and let England tickle there tummies.

He asked Thommo which players would stand up and be counted? Thommo replied that his answer wouldn’t take very long!!

Sir Garfield Sobers 2013

Sir Garfield Sobers

Next up, the greatest All Round Cricketer the world has ever seen, Sir Garfield Sobers.

A Gentleman in every respect of the word. He told stories about facing some of the fastest bowlers and best batsmen on the planet throughout his long and illustrious career.

A knowledgeable guest enthused about how today’s batsmen played shots through 360 degrees of the pitch, even against very fast bowlers. Sir Gary looked him in the eye and asked him how many 360 degree shots did he think current batsmen would play on a damp pitch, wearing no helmets with faceguards, and no arm, hip, and body armour? The room erupted into rapturous applause.

Geoff Miller

Geoff Miller

Geoff Miller, Chairman of England selectors and raconteur finished of the evening in hilarious fashion, telling us how the most boring cricketer to ever set foot on a cricket pitch had been elevated to his current position where he now chooses from some of the most exciting cricketers in Great Britain and has the absolute honour and delight of saying “Son, You are going to play for England”

An Evening with Gary Sobers and Friends was just one of many Sporting Lunches and Dinners that In The Black Events produce up and down the country.
